For some reason this morning I opened my Bible straight to Micah 7:18-19:

"Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity and passes over the rebellious act of the remnant of His possession? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in unchanging love.

"He will again have compassion on us; He will tread our iniquities under foot. Yes, You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea."
(emphasis added)

Wow. What an incredible God ...

Every time I read from Micah, I'm reminded of my college roommate Micah Wierenga. We were in a pretty major car accident together and came through it with only a few stitches and neck collars for a couple days.

I sometimes reflect back on that accident and realize again that God was definitely watching out for us. As that little maroon Chevette was rolling over and over -- end over end once -- at 70 MPH on the side of that Birmingham interstate, we were being protected. Not only was God watching out for us; He was loving us. He spared our lives so we could live on and love Him with our lives.

Another passage that I read this morning was John 13:34-35:

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." (emphasis added)

That passage just made me stop and think of some ways in which it could have been meant. When Jesus spoke those words at the "last supper", He was speaking to the men who were closest to him, His disciples. And I'm sure that He was also speaking to you and me since He knew even then that 2,000 years later we'd be reading His words.

When I put the Micah passage with the John passage, it's even clearer than ever. We are loved by an eternal God so we can love others. And while this is no huge revelation, it is a really good reminder of what our attitude should be from moment to moment throughout each day.

God's love for me is unchanging. My love for others should be unchanging.
